The Position Importance

n Overlooked Notion

A gambler’s position at the table while playing a hand is the most ignored concept involved in gambling winning Holdem.

There is one interesting adage that notices “The key to achievement in business is just location, location, location”. And we can paraphrase that adage “The key to success in Hold’em is just “Position, Position, Position.” However the large number of the newer gamblers and some of the older players have no knowledge about the significance of position or they just ignore it. Before opening our discussion about starting hands you have to understand the importance of your position.

If you want to be successful gambling Hold’em you have to learn the 3 P’s: Power, Position and Patience. The first P is the position as the strength of the hand is dependent upon the place to the dealer button.

It’ll be much better to raise a starting hand if you are on the button or in the late position.
The position depends on your place of sitting to the dealer’s button.

The order in Texas Holdem is fixed (but it can’t be said about 7 card studs, where the betting order is constantly changes). Before the flop the gambler that is to the left of the big blind bets 1st. The 1st active gambler to the left of the dealer button bets first after the flop. If the player is in early position he’ll remain there just for all betting rounds. (Even in a case if the blinds formulate their decision last before the flop).
Here are 7 positions in a 10 handed Texas Holdem game.
Big Blind –Gambler posting big blind.
Small Blind –Gambler posting small blind.
Button - The gambler with the dealer button.
Early – The 2 gamblers after UTG.
Late – The 2 gamblers after Middle.
Middle – The 2 gamblers after Early.
Under the Gun (UTG)- Gambler who acts 1st after the big blind.

A gambler in early position has such a disadvantage that he/she has no idea what the gamblers betting after him/her will do. The pot could be re-raised or raised after a player enters the hand. That’s why a gambler needs to have a stronger hand if he/she wants to gamble from that earl position. Before calling the blind with a hand in early position a player should understand if he/she would gamble that hand if he/she knew the pot would be definitely raised. If a gambler wouldn’t call that hand raising then he/she shouldn’t gamble.

Knowledge is power in poker. A player has the better chance of accessing an opponent’s hand if he/she has the more information. And the more information a gambler has if the later he/she acts. When a gambler is in late position he has seen what the gamblers before him has done. In a case of re-raising or raising a player knows that some of the gamblers potentially may have strong hands and a player can fold. In a case of the absence of callers and being last to act a gambler can steal the blind just by raising with the nearest hand because of gambler’s position. A player will hear gamblers refer to this gamble as a positional raise.

There’re a lot of hands in Texas Holdem which are drawing hands. Connectors and suited cards play fine against a big field. Gambling such a hand as a suited 10-9 for a bet when there are 6-5 gamblers calling the pot, even can be really profitable in a case if you make the hand. Of course, it’s just impossible to make your hand so often. That’s why you want to see that there is just as much money in the pot as can give you the proper odds while gambling these hands.

After getting correct odds it is just as much money in the pot, as you need to cover the times you will not make the hand concerning to the odds of making the hand. Gambling such hand from early position when the pot is already rose forcing other gamblers to fold, you can be against 1 or 2 gamblers with rather strong hands and not even enough money in the pot to go on with your hand after the flop and make it gainful.

After the flop in late position you have more information that can help you determine how to gamble. Having a strong hand, you have a chance to raise if other players bet or you may bet if everyone has already checked. If you want to gain a free card you may check in a case of your having a drawing hand. When there have been raises or bets before you, and the hand wasn’t assisted by the flop, you may fold without it cost but with the help of additional bet.

You have no such a brilliant opportunity in early position after the flop. In a case of your betting you will have a chance of being raised. If you don’t have anything and check in believing of seeing just the turn for free a gambler in later position will of course bet and you’ll have to fold. Having a strong hand and checking, you have a dream of check raising and of course there is an opportunity that everyone else may check. And you may lose some probable bets that would have gone just into the pot.

Holdem is a play of lots variables. You should take into account everything: your opponents, your hand, the action that preceded you and your position, while playing a hand. There are no two similar hands that mean you cannot gamble each hand the same method. If you understand all importance of your position it can help you to make the right decisions. Gamblers who consider that they can gamble just the same hand from various positions have no an opportunity to be winners. Learning to gamble the correct hand from the correct position will take much time in improving the play. Position is one of even the most misunderstood and overlooked concepts of Hold’em. A lot of new gamblers will pay the hand without accounting their position. Not all Texas Hold’em hands are playable from various positions.
